Emergency Checklist


Checklist for an Emergency Supply Kit

  1. Water, one gallon of water per person per day for drinking and sanitation
  2. Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
  3. Battery-powered radio and extra batteries
  4. Flashlight and extra batteries
  5. First-aid kit
  6. Whistle to signal for help
  7. Dust mask or cotton T-shirt, to help filter the air
  8. Moist towelettes
  9. Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
  10. Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)
  11. Plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place
  12. Infant formula and diapers, if you have an infant
  13. Garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
  14. A copy of your emergency preparedness plan


Clothing and Bedding
North Carolina residents must prepare for cold weather months. It is possible that the power will be out and there will be no heat. Pack one complete change of warm closthing and shoes per person, including:

  1. A jacket or coat
  2. Long pants
  3. A long-sleeve shirt
  4. Sturdy shoes
  5. A hat and gloves
  6. A sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person


Other Items to Consider

  1. Emergency reference material such as a first-aid book
  2. Rain gear
  3. Mess kits, paper cups, plates and plastic utensils
  4. Cash or travelers checks, change
  5. Paper towels
  6. Fire extinguisher
  7. Tent
  8. Compass
  9. Matches in a waterproof container
  10. Signal flare
  11. Paper, pencil
  12. Medicine dropper
  13. Feminine supplies
  14. Personal hygiene items
  15. Disinfectant
  16. Household chlorine bleach

Bleach can be used as a disinfectant (diluted nine parts water to one part bleach), or to purify water. Use 16 drops of regular household liquid bleach per gallon of water. Do not use scented, color safe or bleaches with added cleaners.
